Your cars management system controls many systems including fuel injection, ignition timing and exhaust emission.
In the event of a car fault, the computer will put a fault light up on the dash to inform the driver that there is a problem. The car can go into a limp home mode to minimise any engine damage and allow the car to be taken in to be rectified.
The car is then plugged into a scanner computer, which searches for the fault via fault codes and live data. For more involved problems a lap top computer will be used.
